Celebrating Culture and Community: Eagles Soar High During NAIDOC Round
A weekend of respect, learning, and breathtaking performances brought our football community together
Edgewater Woodvale Junior Football Club community came together for something truly special in July – our NAIDOC Round celebrations that honoured the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The highlight of our celebrations was undoubtedly the magnificent performance by Boorloo Aboriginal Cultural Experiences, who shared their time and culture with our entire football family.
Cultural Exchange on the Field
In the true spirit of NAIDOC Week, our players participated in the meaningful tradition of pre-game gift exchanges with opposing teams. This beautiful custom showcases the respect and cultural exchange that makes Australian Rules Football such a special part of our community fabric. Watching our young players engage in this tradition of mutual respect was a powerful reminder of the values we strive to instil both on and off the field.
These exchanges represent more than just a ceremonial gesture – they embody the deeper meaning of NAIDOC Week and our commitment to recognising and celebrating the world’s oldest continuous cultures.
A Community United
The weekend provided an incredible opportunity for our entire club community to learn, reflect, and celebrate together. From our youngest players to our most experienced coaches and volunteers, everyone was engaged in honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Boorloo Aboriginal Cultural Experiences for making this weekend so meaningful. Their generosity in sharing their knowledge and culture with us has enriched our understanding and strengthened our community bonds.
Looking Forward
We encourage all our members to take time to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their ongoing contributions to our society. The lessons learned and connections made this weekend will continue to inspire our club throughout the season and beyond.
Thank you to everyone who participated in making our NAIDOC Round celebrations such a success. Together, we’ve shown that football is about much more than the game itself – it’s about bringing communities together, fostering respect, and celebrating the diverse cultures that make us stronger.
The Edgewater Woodvale Junior Football Club is proud to be part of a sporting community that embraces and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures during NAIDOC Week and throughout the year.
