INDIGENOUS GUERNSEY

INDIGENOUS GUERNSEY

The jumper was designed by the incredibly talented and brilliant Nicole Casley. Nicole is a former EWJFC Committee member and a Wadjuk, Wardandi, Ballardong and Bibulman Noongar and Ngadju woman who lives in Edgewater on the lands of her ancestors, the Wadjuk people of the Swan coastal plain.

Edgewater-Woodvale Junior Football Club is situated on Whadjuk Noongar boodjar, in an area characterised by large tracts of bushland, freshwater lakes and wetlands. The area was home to the Whadjuk leader Yellagonga and his family, and contains many significant sites, camping, hunting and meeting places for Wadjuk people. These lands and waters remain places of great spiritual and historical significance to Wadjuk people today.

Our jumper design tells the story of our club in this special place. Making use of the club’s traditional colours of blue, gold and white, we start at the top with concentric light blue circles. These represent the ‘pinjar’, the lakes and wetlands that are a defining feature of Edgewater and Woodvale.

The yellow tracks leading towards the centre of the jumper are the ‘bidi’, the pathways that club members, volunteers and families take from their homes to ‘ngalla Maya’, our home at at Emerald Park, represented by the large circle in the centre.

The club mascot, the ‘Waarlitj’ or Eagle, nests within. The strength, power and of the Waarlitj is revered throughout Noongar country, and it represents overcoming adversity and succeeding where others fail.

The curved u-shaped symbols inside the yellow bidi are our ‘moort’, the EWJFC families that come from near and far.

The curved white and blue lines at the bottom of the jumper represent Wardan, the ocean to the west of our home ground.

Our players are extremely proud to have the honour of wearing this jumper on game day.
